About Alyssa

About me

Hi, I'm Alyssa, a third-year Human Nutrition and Metabolism student at the University of Otago, originally from Mount Maunganui. I started university doing a double major in Psychology and Nutrition, switched Psychology out for Marketing, then eventually dropped Marketing to focus solely on Human Nutrition and Metabolism with a minor in Sports Nutrition. I share this because it's easy to think everyone else has their future figured out, but the reality is that many students change direction along the way. University is a time to explore your interests and find the path that's right for you. As a Year 13 student I wanted a clear picture of what a Nutrition degree actually looked like, and I couldn't find one. That's exactly why I wanted to do this. From what papers you have to take, how difficult the degree is, how to handle first year Health Science, how to become a dietitian, and what career options exist on the other side, I'm here to answer all of it.

My uni experience

Human Nutrition actually gets easier as the years go on, which surprised me. First year is broad, second year becomes more tailored to nutrition, and by third year the focus shifts to developing practical skills rather than rote learning content. Day to day my schedule is very relaxed with a lot of spare time to work and socialise. I was in Cumberland College in first year. The food was pretty decent and it had a homey feel compared to some other halls. Socially it was great, a good mix of people who wanted to enjoy the Dunedin experience. The hall was small enough that you got familiar with everyone, but big enough to find your people. I flat with nine girls now so I'm never short of company! I'm part of a run club, the Nutrition Society which hosts weekly events, and I volunteer at a community kitchen. There's definitely a good balance of everything going on.
