About me

Hi, I'm Emilee! I'm a third-year Management and Marketing student at the University of Otago, originally from Taupō. Moving to Dunedin three years ago was honestly one of the best decisions I've made. I've been involved in Otago Open Days, chatting with Year 13 students about what university is really like, which is a big part of what drew me to being an advisor. Whether you're unsure about your degree, wondering what first year looks like socially or academically, or just have general questions about student life, I'm here to help. I'm friendly, easy to talk to, and always happy to keep the conversation going, so if you're a bit nervous, don't stress!

My uni experience

A BCom is known for being one of the more flexible degrees and I'd generally agree. The workload is very manageable compared to some other degrees, but that doesn't mean you won't be kept busy. In first year your timetable is quite structured with regular lectures and workshops. As you move through your degree, there's more of a focus on independent learning and taking ownership of your own study. Before I started uni, I was worried I wouldn't keep up and that my grades would drop compared to high school. Looking back, those worries were completely normal. Once you make friends in your classes and get to know your lecturers and tutors, everything becomes much more manageable. There is so much support available. I stayed at Studholme College, one of the smaller halls, and absolutely loved it. It was really easy to make friends because everyone is in the same position and looking to meet new people. The food was good overall, and not having to cook for yourself three times a day is a huge bonus. Every hall has its own vibe and I genuinely believe you'll have a great experience no matter which one you end up in. The social side definitely changes as you move through your degree. In first year it was really easy to meet people through halls, club nights, and social events, plus lots of casual catch-ups at lunch and dinner or late-night chats in rooms. In second and third year it's shifted more towards house parties, coffee catch-ups, and study dates. I've also found a much better balance between socialising and staying on top of uni work. Everyone is figuring it out as they go, and you'll naturally settle into a routine that works for you.

Hobbies

Going to the gym (UniPol on campus has been such a bonus!), hiking and exploring the walks around Dunedin, music (Lana Del Rey, The Beatles, and Jeff Buckley are some favourites), and browsing Facebook Marketplace and op shops for a good find.
