About Emily

About me

Kia ora! I'm Emily, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Otago, originally from Palmerston North. I was the first person in my family to go to university, so choosing what to study felt really scary. I didn't have many people around me who could help with applications or answer my questions, so I know how overwhelming it can feel. I hope I can make the process a little less daunting and help you explore what path might be right for you. Outside of medicine, I love baking (especially cake pops!), spending time with friends and family, getting creative with arts and crafts, and reading. Looking forward to chatting about what university could look like for you!

My uni experience

First Year Health Science was a massive workload, I wish I could sugarcoat it. You're often spending eight hours a day studying and attending classes. But once you get through Health Sci and into medicine, the loss of competitiveness and the pressure to get A+ grades makes it feel like a weight has been lifted. You also just get better at managing things over time. Fourth year has honestly been the most chilled year yet! I stayed at St Margaret's, which has a reputation for being one of the more academic halls. Looking back, I probably wouldn't choose it again if you're doing HSFY, because having so many people around you studying the same programme can mean you never really switch off. That said, every hall has its pros and cons. All of them offer great academic support, including tutors for HSFY papers. My hall also had some great perks: cooked breakfasts every morning and even an ice cream machine! I'll be honest. I didn't really throw myself into the social side of uni in first year because I was still finding my confidence. By second, third, and fourth year I'd come out of my shell a lot more. Everyone will tell you balance is important, and I'm going to say the same thing because it's true. Make time for the things you love, whether that's the gym, reading, sport, baking, or hanging out with friends. Looking after yourself will make you a happier and better student.

Hobbies

Baking (I even run a small cake pop business!), reading, arts and crafts, and spending time with friends.

My biggest piece of advice: you don't have to have your whole future planned out right now. Be open to opportunities, take it step by step, and don't be afraid to back yourself!
