About Sophie

About me

Hi, I'm Sophie, from Wellington. I ended up in the wrong degree in my first year and switched into Speech and Language Pathology, and I genuinely wish I'd had honest advice earlier rather than people just telling me to follow what I was good at in high school. That's exactly why I wanted to do this. I'm here to give you a real picture of what uni is actually like, not just the polished version.

My uni experience

The workload changes a lot year to year. Fourth year is much more independent and self-driven compared to earlier years, so the way you study has to shift as you go. I was in University Hall Ngata in first year. I'm a very social person so being in a big hall worked really well for me. The food was fine, I'm not fussy, and I was happy enough with dining hall meals. If you're after the social side of halls, it's a great option. The social side of uni has been really fun with a good group of friends around me, but even so, first year can feel really overwhelming and even lonely at times, especially when you're away from home for the first time. I joined loads of clubs in first year but didn't fully commit to most of them. Looking back, I wish I had. Find one or two you actually care about and show up consistently.

Hobbies

I love the outdoors: tramping, camping, and travel, whether that's overseas or exploring New Zealand.
