Sophie Kensington

About me

Hi there! I'm Sophie, a fourth-year student at the University of Canterbury, originally from Auckland. I made the move down to Christchurch for university, so I know firsthand what it's like to leave home and start somewhere new. I'm a very chatty and approachable person who loves meeting new people, and I know that deciding on university can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming, especially if you're thinking about moving away from home. My cousin is currently in Year 13 and recently came down to visit me in Christchurch. I showed her around campus, talked her through what uni life is really like, and answered all her questions. Seeing how much it helped gave me the motivation to do the same for other students. Whether you want to know about halls, different degrees, student life, making friends, or what it's really like studying at UC, I'm happy to answer any questions.

My uni experience

My degree is quite demanding, and I'm usually busy Monday to Friday on a schedule similar to school hours. Because my degree includes placements and clinical work, my timetable can vary depending on which clinic I'm in. That said, it's still very manageable to have a life outside of uni. I make plenty of time to catch up with friends, explore Christchurch, and go for walks. I stayed in University Hall in my first year and absolutely loved it. I'd go back in a heartbeat! It was such an easy way to meet new people, and it's actually where I met the seven people I've lived with ever since. The food, social events, and overall experience made settling into uni life much easier. Every hall has its own vibe, so I'm happy to chat through the different options. The social side of uni has been one of my favourite parts. Christchurch has a really good student scene with heaps of clubs, regular events on campus, and a great social scene in the city on weekends. One thing people don't always realise is that your social life is really what you make of it. Plus, if you ever want a change of scenery, Dunedin is only a few hours away for an easy weekend trip!

Hobbies

Getting out for walks around Christchurch, going to the gym, and spending time with my flatmates, whether that's a relaxed night in, grabbing dinner together, or heading out for an evening sweet treat.
