About Tula
About me
Hello! I'm Tula, in my final year of studying Law at Otago. Starting university isn't a small feat, and the journey isn't linear. It's scary stepping into the unknown, going from being at the top of the high school food chain to an environment where everything is brand new. Starting university isn't just beginning a new course of study. It's an introduction to adulthood, independence, and the ability to make your own choices. I want to pass on what I've learned throughout my time at university and provide the support and advice I wish I'd had when I started.
My uni experience
Law is definitely a demanding degree, but I've taught myself to work smarter, not harder. The workload consists of lectures, tutorials, and a significant amount of reading, and having a solid set of notes that covers lecture content, related readings, and practice questions is really important. The workload obviously increases during exam periods. I won't lie and say I haven't stayed at the library for over 12 hours before, but that doesn't mean you will have to too, I promise! I was in Unicol in first year, which wasn't my first choice. If you like getting social from Wednesday to Saturday, it's definitely for you. But even if that isn't your thing, the hall is huge, so there are spaces to break away from that environment when it's time to lock in. Food sucks. Toast Time rules. It was really hard to make meaningful connections at uni for me. I assumed people would be actively looking to make new friends, but that can be challenging when there are already pre-formed friendship groups from high school. Throughout law school I've made friends, but due to the nature of the degree, it's rare to get a chance to hang out outside of studying together.
Hobbies
I love the gym and teach group fitness classes as my uni side hustle. I enjoy baking during exam season as a stress relief, and it could be for you too!
